So my girlfriend knows the way to my heart. Her Civic has been having alternator related troubles (always starts though) and she's going to autozone today to get it checked out. She was saying that she wants to learn more about working on cars and she wants the two of us to fix it! After looking it up online though, it seems like a pain. Removing the drivers side wheel, and having to coax the alternator in and out through a small hole under the mud flaps. All of which is a bit different than working on my Volvo where the hood is so large it's practically a second boot. The two of us don't know too much about car repair but there's a guide online on how to do it and I have the tools for it. Is a transverse alternator swap easy for a beginner? Have some rice!

can help, fairly knowledgable on this generation of civic. Can you confirm 2 things for me first, what year is it? and does it have a d-series (single over head cam) engine or B-series (dual overhead cam) engine?
D looks like
and the B looks like

Hey Bro, isn't that a trans am? :p

I'm assuming it is most likely the D-series, and this write up is pretty spot on.

you are correct that removing the plastic guards is involved, but the task is truly not too hard.
If you've done an oil change, or perhaps replaced your own brake pads before I'd say this is right around that same level of difficulty.

1999 LX, so I can't imagine it's a B block. Gotta be a D

Pretty sure that's a lambo, bro

Yeah I read that one! I actually haven't done any real car maintenance like replacing brake pads or changed oil, but I will do both in the not to distant future. My dad never did any car work himself so all car maintenance knowledge I have is from just working on my car

you appear to be in North Carolina, which is a far shout from Denver, otherwise I'd happily lend a hand. any opponauts in NC want to play backup? a second set of eyes is always handy.

The answer is "pull motor".

And then drop in the Impala SS transverse LS engine?

Yeah, that works for me.

I've seen this car once. In person. It's registered here in Wisconsin. The picture do not truly convey how 90's ricer this car is.

The '97-'02 Escort requires pulling the alternator out from above through a small gap behind the headlight.
The '91-'96 Escort has it in the same spot, but a different mount bracket means you have to remove the power steering fluid reservoir to get it out.
Hope yours is not as "fun"!
